![]() ![]() Or sometimes a bottomless, spike-lined pit. The game's pleasant world invites you in and puts you at ease, before shoving you off a cliff and into a bed of spikes. Multiplayer aside, Dustforce remains a delightful platformer that is both soothing and stressful. Ultimately, the online multiplayer feels like a negligible addition to the game. Both modes also lack any sort of matchmaking function, and after each match ends, you are immediately booted back to the main menu without the option of a rematch, which means re-creating your lobby all over again. Both modes-Survival and King of the Hill-put the focus on player-versus-player combat rather than terrain navigation, the game's strong suit. Multiplayer in this new version of Dustforce remains the game's weakest feature. There's even one on that little ledge up there. ![]() There are plenty of secret areas to discover in Dustforce. The simplicity of Dustforce's early stages also helps ease you into your new role as ninja custodian before the game quickly ramps up the difficulty. Both elements work in harmony to keep you focused on the task at hand. The score is complemented by a soft pastel color palette that is easy on the eyes and doesn't distract you with too much visual noise. In my previous review, I mentioned how the music has a calming, trancelike effect akin to that of inMomentum and Mirror's Edge, and that definitely holds true in this new version. This could drive some people to the breaking point, but Dustforce keeps you at ease with its soothing soundtrack and lush world. Of course, reaching the finish line on those harder stages involves a lot of trial and error. It's an enjoyable challenge, and successfully mastering a stage is very satisfying. ![]() All you have to do is find the path, and walk it. The developers have an optimal path laid out for you in each stage. Dustforce involves equal parts planning and execution, and feels at times like you're playing a puzzle game. Spikes, bottomless pits, and numerous enemies test every ounce of your platforming skill. PlayStation 3 players can also record their favorite runs for later review, a feature that is missing in the Vita version.Ĭompleting stages rewards you with gold and silver keys that unlock more advanced stages, and those behind the gold doors are no joke. You can also watch runs from other players through the leaderboard, which is an especially useful way for improving your own times on the more difficult stages. Each stage has its own leaderboard where you can compare your best time against others. Each of Dustforce's four heroes controls a little differently.Īfter you finish a stage, the game judges you on completion (did you sweep up all the garbage?) and finesse (did you sweep up all the garbage stylishly?), as well as noting your time. It's a bit confusing at first, but the game provides a comprehensive tutorial that quickly brings you up to speed on how to maneuver through this world. Running and jumping are easy enough, but there are restrictions on how many times you can dash or jump again while in midair. As I noted in my original review, Dustforce has a strict economy of movement. ![]()

In his vision, he'd christen the new pub and eatery in the summer of 2015. The idea seemed so good at the time to Bob Youst. ![]() ![]() ![]() We want a separator that separates orthographic words (= clusters of contiguous letters) a tad more than an ordinary space while still indicating that things belong together. for nouns (these are too complex) instead pay attention to the semantic structure, because this is the only thing that ultimately counts. That is: Don't look at simple rules telling you about hyphenated adjectives, prefixes, etc. This is very important: When I have a compound such as "pre-World War II", I really want it to appear as pre-–World␣War␣II (too bad Unicode en-dashes don't render correctly on this forum!) with ␣ standing in for a fixed (non-stretchable) space ( this question is about how to produce such fixed-width spaces), because semantically the compound has the structure ], because the "pre" modifies the entire compound word/expression "World War II", not just the word "World". As a hyphen-replacement, functioning as a semantic linking element in a compound word (most frequently: a compound noun) that binds together two elements more loosely than a normal-space-in-that-same-compound.For this parenthetical usage, the em-dash is more common in US typography, while the en-dash is more common in UK typography. This also works well with kerning (see above). The en-dash in this usage is always surrounded by spaces. As a modern punctuation mark for parenthetical phrases. The en-dash ( -) has two frequent usages: (Note that usage of either em- or en-dashes for parenthetical purposes includes many cases where you visually see only one em/en-dash, simply because of the implicit orthographic rule that the beginning or end of a sentence "eats" one member of the "dash-dash parenthesis symbol pair".) Of course that would not apply to em-dashes surrounded by spaces (the NYTimes style guide recommends this, for this reason), but keep in mind that this makes for really fat typographic separation. ![]() While you could describe this as a question of visual taste, one definite problem with em-dashes without surrounding spaces is that tracking (aka letter-spacing aka "stretching" in some TeX lingo) doesn't play well with this: interword spacing will increase uniformly for words separated by spaces but will remain fixed for words separated by an em-dash without surrounding spaces. (Some sources recommend "hair spaces" around the em-dash for this practice, but other sources recommend against that, and I don't see this commonly done by newspapers and magazines in the US.) This practice is recommended against by some style guides these days (typographer Robert Bringhurst indirectly calls the em-dash "Victorian"), and I agree. In US typography, parenthetical phrases are traditionally set off with em-dashes without surrounding spaces. The most common generally accepted possible use case is before a name in a quotation that is attributed only to a person (that is: not quoted bibliographically), say, at the beginning of a paper or chapter. The em-dash ( -) has very few recommended use cases nowadays. (For example, I'm omitting discussion of the various uses of dashes in dialogues or quoted speech because (1) they pop up rarely in the (La)TeX world as they are mostly relevant to copyeditors of fiction (who can be assumed to have learned the rules otherwise) and (2) their usage is rare and thus not necessarily governed by hard-and-fast, rigid rules.) I am not saying that my answer is exhaustive. Note that I'm listing only the cases that occur most frequently and that seem to raise the most questions. Rather than hiding all the information in comments, here is a summary. The answers and comments I have seen so far are incomplete and not entirely accurate in some regards. ![]() ![]() My final goodbye to generativism happened in the late 1980s. And the theory has changed radically, also due to unusability and lots of counter-evidence that has been presented against it. I remember a colleague who said: “Oh, now the VP is no longer a ‘barrier'”, when Chomsky’s book came out. Also, I thought it was strange that when Chomsky changed his mind, the herd automatically followed. Already as a student, I was interested in non-(Indo-)European languages, especially Basque and Amerindian languages, and I could not see how they fit into a model based on English. I think there are several reasons why I did not become a generativist. PB: As you know, I got solid training in GG in Amsterdam where I studied linguistics, and several of my most admired teachers, later colleagues, were generativists. Peter, why didn’t you become a generati vist? Chomsky’s language theory is based on the language ability of the individual, and since I early on became interested in the relationship between language, psychology and the brain, GG was the natural choice for me. Sten Vikner showed me how GG could explain typological differences and similarities in the Germanic languages, and Steven Pinker showed me how GG could be used as an explanatory model for the relationship between language and cognition, including language acquisition, language comprehension and production, language pathology and evolution. ![]() KRC: First of all, I was fascinated by the formal precision that Noam Chomsky’s GG offered, compared to the many other theoretical approaches that I was introduced when I was a student of linguistics at Aarhus University. Ken, why and how did you become a generativist? Ken Ramshøj Christensen (KRC) and Peter Bakker (PB) interview each other about Chomsky and GG. Many years ago, Peter Bakker was thesis supervisor for Ken Ramshøj Christensen’s MA thesis, which was about GG and aphasia. Both are educated within the theory, but where Peter Bakker abandoned his ‘faith’ in the model several decades ago, Ken Ramshøj Christensen still works within Generative Grammar ( abbreviated below as GG). On the occasion of the event, Peter Bakker and Ken Ramshøj Christensen, both from Aarhus University, sat down to discuss the significance of Chomsky’s generative theory. ![]() At the age of 94, he is giv ing a lecture (online) at Aarhus University on February 10, 2023. ![]() Skinner, Jean Piaget, and other cognitive and social-learning theorists who emphasize the role of experience and general knowledge and abilities in language acquisition.Noam Chomsky’s influence on linguistics in the last half century is probably greater than that of any other linguist.
